Welcome to the
Charleston, SC Online Angel Tree

Making a difference in your community…

The Salvation Army of Charleston served over 2,000 children with Christmas gifts last year (2024).

Angel Tree makes certain that children just like yours experience the magic of Christmas this year.

Angel tags can be found in various Walmart and Panera locations, as well as Northwoods Mall.

We couldn't help as many families in the LowCountry as we do now, if it weren't for the help of our volunteers

Giving to Angel Tree brings just as much joy to our donors as to the families we serve.

How Angel Tree Works

1
Parents come in-person to our West Ashley facility, as well as various locations in Dorchester County, for registration.
2
Parents provide their ID, the kids' birth certificates, and proof of income to register their children for the program.
3
Each year, we assess our reach and endeavor to add more locations to reach more LowCountry residents if need be.
4
Our donors come from all walks of life. Some are only able to give a couple of toys, or tow shop for one child. Others adopt whole families.
5
This year we are distributing from N.C. Convention Center, Woodland High, Cross High, and St. James-Santee El/Middle.
6
We try to make distribution as simple and painless for the families as possible, by doing it drive-through style.

A History Of Community Involvement

Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army's highest profile Christmas efforts. Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time.

The program got its name because the Whites identified the wishes of local children by writing their gift needs on Hallmark greeting cards that featured pictures of angels. They placed the cards on a Christmas tree at the mall to allow shoppers to select children to help. Thanks to the Whites, who were assigned by The Army to the Lynchburg area at the time, more than 700 children had a brighter Christmas that first year.

Three years later, when the Whites were transferred to Nashville, Tennessee, Angel Tree was launched in the Music City. WSM radio, which airs the Grand Ol' Opry, came on board that year as the first Angel Tree co-sponsor in the U.S.

Because of the on-air promotion on WSM in Nashville, as well as national publicity on CNN and the Larry King Show, news of Angel Tree spread across the country like wildfire.

The Salvation Army has been serving the LowCountry from Charleston SC since 1906. Not too long after that, it began its Christmas work of serving the children of this community through Angel Tree. Each year, through thick and thin, we are here for the community, serving people of all ages, races, and creeds, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
