How Angel Tree Works

1
Beginning 10/02/23, families in need of holiday assistance can apply to have their children (ages 0-12) placed on the Angel Tree. Applications determine eligibility by income or extenuating circumstances.
2
The application also captures each childs specific clothing sizes, needs, & gift wishes. Eligible children's needs/wishes/sizes will be printed on Angel tags with the child's first name & an Angel code.
3
Angel tags are then placed on Trees around town at participating locations & online. (See the map below for specific Angel Tree locations or click Adopt an Angel in the top right corner of this page for online adoption)
4
Donors select an Angel then purchase brand-new clothing & brand-new gifts for their Angel. Items are returned to the tree UNWRAPPED & all bags are marked with the Angel code. The deadline to return items is 12/08/23.
5
The Angel gifts are collected & taken to the Distribution Center to be inspected & then prepared for the BIG distribution day! (The Salvation Army shops for all angels that aren't adopted or returned by the deadline.)
6
Families pick up their Angel Gifts & a Christmas dinner food box on their scheduled pick-up day! For more information on applying, adopting or donating: Christina.Smith@uss.salvationarmy.org (304)622-2360 Ext4

A History Of Community Involvement

Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army's highest profile Christmas efforts. Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time.

The program got its name because the Whites identified the wishes of local children by writing their gift needs on Hallmark greeting cards that featured pictures of angels. They placed the cards on a Christmas tree at the mall to allow shoppers to select children to help. Thanks to the Whites, who were assigned by The Army to the Lynchburg area at the time, more than 700 children had a brighter Christmas that first year.

Three years later, when the Whites were transferred to Nashville, Tennessee, Angel Tree was launched in the Music City. WSM radio, which airs the Grand Ol' Opry, came on board that year as the first Angel Tree co-sponsor in the U.S.

Because of the on-air promotion on WSM in Nashville, as well as national publicity on CNN and the Larry King Show, news of Angel Tree spread across the country like wildfire.

The local program includes Angel Trees in Meadowbrook Mall, Walmart and on-site at area corporations, churches and organizations. The local communities have fully supported the Angel Tree program, making it possible to help numerous children each year.
